Portland is one of the best cities to spend an evening enjoying the city whether you are traveling solo or with some friends. Portland has a unique vibe that’s very laid back and relaxing, yet you get all the cool city life things like bars, clubs, restaurants, and the social atmosphere we all want. There are many things to do in Portland day or night, however I’ll share with you my must do things below!
I’d say the number one thing to do is experience the coffee culture and/or beer culture. It’s absolutely massive in this city. And to add just one more thing, day trips from Portland to Canon beach or Multnomah Falls is an incredible experience that will be worth your time!
How to Get to Portland, Oregon
Portland is located in Oregon in the Pacific North West regions, and almost everyone gets in and out by car or plane!
You’ll likely need to drive or rent a car in Portland. Public transit is available and easy to use in populated areas, but your own vehicle is recommended so you can get around easily, and to visit the Pacific North West coast.
Where to Eat in Portland, Oregon at Night
Portland is one of the biggest cities for food in all of the U.S. so you will have an treasure chest of places to eat.
Of all the places to eat, I highly recommend eating from one of the food trucks located all over the city. There are many “pods” which are collections of food trucks that you can find in popular areas. The Alder Pod located in downtown is the best pod for variety and size, containing around 50 different food trucks.
Other really popular places to eat in Portland include Pok Pok (Thai), Hat Yai (Thai), Ox (steakhouse), Boxer Ramen (Japanese), and Star Pizza (Chicago style pizza). Again, great food is everywhere and you will never run out of places to eat!
Things to See in Portland, Oregon at Night
Have a beer // Portland is a city of beer! You will find local breweries all over the city, with the most popular being Deschutes brewery. They have a restaurant where you can eat and drink, and it’s very popular among business people and visitors.
Enjoy a cup of coffee // Portland also has a buzzing coffee shop scene! They have so many amazing coffee shops to experience on both sides of the river. There are too many to name, however Stumptown Coffee Roasters is Portlands most well known coffee shop and would make an excellent first choice. You likely won’t be disappointed in any coffee shop you happen to wander into.
Go shopping // The trendiest shopping street in Portland is located at Alberta Ave. Here you’ll find really cute unique stores selling fashionable items and one of a kind things. You’ll also find many restaurants to grab a bite, and other fun food places like ice cream shops. Alberta Ave is a great place to spend an afternoon strolling around, shopping, and eating.
See the water // Portland has a great waterfront area called Tom McCall Waterfront Park which is an amazing place to go for a walk or run. It’s a great area to relax any time of day, and there are often events going on very close by to check out too.
Experience the liberal side // There are many other things to do in Portland, however since this is a list of things to do after 5:00 pm, I’d like to leave you with a couple more alternative suggestions. Portland is a place where you can legally buy edibles and other marijuana products. You can find locations all over the city. Portland also has the most gentleman night clubs in the entire world per capita, and they are a more liberal city with these things.
Portland is one of the most relaxing and laid back cities you’ll experience in the U.S. I highly recommend relaxing and taking in this alternative city. Get some good food, drink a little (if that’s your thing), wander around the city, and take it easy! Portland has a few really cool areas that are hippish, older, or a bit alternative. They are great places to wander around at night, relax, drink, and meet new people. If you’re looking for a big list of 50 things to do in Portland, read this blog post.
