Amsterdam is a city full of culture, oddities, great food, art and picturesque moments. This northern European city is a gem for anyone looking to explore and experience a mixture of experiences.
You HAVE to cruise the canals! Don’t leave the city without getting the perspective of being on the water!
How to Get to Amsterdam
You should arrive via Schipol Airport or Amsterdam Central station.
Get around Amsterdam by biking! Amsterdam is best known for the massive amount of black bikes. It’s much easier to commute via bike or walk than drive. They have a tram as well that helps get you through the city center.
Where to Eat in Amsterdam
De Japponer // Japanese food in Amsterdam? Yes, please! This Japanese street pub has excellent gyoza and small plates.
Cafe Hoppe // Grab a beer at this 17th-century canal house. This is known to be a local spot for Amsterdammers. Try having a taste of Dutch Jenever while you are there.
De Silveren Spiegel // This Michelin Star restaurant sits in a leaning Dutch building. It has amazing food and feels like you are eating on an old wooden ship!
Restaurant Jansz // Check out this epic restaurant located at the Hotel Pulitzer. It’s a great way to see the hotel while also getting a great dining experience. Check out Pulitzer Bar for an after-dinner cocktail.
The Pancake Bakery // Grab some pancakes at this historic restaurant. You can’t leave Holland without having a few pancakes!
Things to See in Amsterdam
Tour the Red Light District // Cliche, I know. If you’ve never been to Amsterdam, you need to stop by here at night to check it off your list. It’s an experience!
Get a Sunset/Nighttime View at a Rooftop // Amsterdam is home to plenty of rooftop bars that allow you to see and experience the city, including A’Dam Lookout, The W Hotel and SkyLounge Amsterdam. Coming to these spots is a great option during sunset. In the summer, sunsets happen at 10 pm!
Explore Dam Rak / The National Monument // The National Monument is right outside the Royal Palace. It’s a giant square that is gorgeous at night. Bring your camera!
Grab a Drink in Alleyways // Amsterdam is a very dense city with many small alleyways. It feels like going back in time with many bars and cafes lit by candles. Find a small alley to unwind and have a tea/beer/coffee.
Have a Dinner Picnic at Vondelpark // Again with sunsets, there’s something magical about northern sunsets. Being from Minnesota, I can relate. If you are on a budget, a great way to spend an evening is in Vondelpark. You can grab some Dutch cheese, wine, bread, beer, etc and sit by one of the many ponds in the park to slow down time.
Ensure that you check out these hidden gems of Amsterdam if you have extra time.
