The capital of Western Australia, Perth, is often neglected during trips to the Land Down Under due to its status as the most isolated city in the world. However, if you find yourself traveling to Oz, do not skip this hub of food, culture and adventure as it has plenty of things that will keep you entertained even after five pm.
Once in Perth, the number one spot you cannot afford to skip is Kings Park and Botanic Garden. Regardless of whether you are traveling solo or with your family, there are so many different things to see and do here. From exploring nature and enjoying the beautiful sights to learning more about Aboriginal history and visiting play areas with your kids, there is something here for everyone. Plus, this amazing place is open 24/7.
How to Get to Perth
There are many ways to get to Perth, depending on where you’re from. If you live outside of Australia, flying there is your best option. Regardless of whether you land at Perth Airport or Jandakot Airport, you can use taxis, shuttles, rideshares and public transport to get to the city. If you’re traveling from another Australian city, you can get to Perth by plane, train, car or cruise ship.
In terms of getting around Perth, you can walk, hire a bike or rent a car. If you prefer public transport, there are ferries, buses and trains. Of course, there is always the option of taxis and rideshares while you can also book a sightseeing tour or use guided hop-on/hop-off buses and trams.
Where to Eat in Perth for Dinner
88 Noodle Bar // When you’re craving some Asian food, go to 88 Noodle Bar. Located at Crown Casino, this venue is open until 11:00 pm on Sundays, midnight from Monday to Thursday, and on Fridays and Saturdays, even until 2:00 am. Keep in mind that it is an 18+ venue.
Little Creatures // If you’re in Fremantle and are in the mood for pizza, visit Little Creatures. This iconic pub is open until 10/11:00 pm and you will also get to enjoy some quality craft beer.
Varnish on King // The go-to American style dining spot is Varnish on King in the CBD. Don’t skip this place if you want some southern fried chicken wings or braised brisket.
The Moon // Burgers, chips, milkshakes and alco-shakes can all be found at The Moon, in addition to their famous mud cake. Known for its classic art deco interior, this joint is open until 1:00 am most days and 3:00 am on Friday and Saturday.
La Cholita // When you feel like tacos, quesadillas and sangria late at night, pop on over to La Cholita. This Mexican place is open until midnight from Sunday to Thursday and until 2:00 am on Fridays and Saturdays.
Things to See in Perth at Night
Perth Observatory // While the Perth Observatory keeps regular 10:00 am to 4:30 pm office hours, you can also go on a unique night tour. Even though the view will depend on the month, weather and lighting conditions, you should not miss this opportunity to see stars, nebulae and galaxies or an unexpected meteor.
Elizabeth Quay // If you’re visiting with your family, your kids will surely love The Elizabeth Quay Carousel so make sure you get there before it closes; it’s usually open until 6:00 pm while on Fridays, Saturdays and Sunday, you can enjoy it until 8:00 pm. Additionally, BHP Water Park is open until 9/10:00 pm during summer and you will love its interactive water feature that creates fun water choreography with jets and lighting. Finally, if you can’t visit these attractions before they close, you can still see the public art and marvel at the look of the whole area once the lights are turned on.
Twilight Hawkers Markets // In the CBD, you can find the best street market in this city. Open only on Fridays, you will have a huge problem choosing what to try from the amazing selection at your disposal; from Moroccan dishes through Thai food all the way to German bratwurst, you will be spoiled for choice.
iFLY Indoor Skydiving Perth // If you’re looking for some adrenaline, you can try indoor skydiving as this venue is open until 9:00 pm and the experience is truly unforgettable.
His Majesty’s Theatre // The Maj opened in 1904 and is still going strong. If you wish to catch a show, make sure you get your tickets on time.
Lake Hillier // A pink saline lake is not a sight you can often see, so why not take this opportunity and see it from the sky? Seeing as how it is surrounded by dense woodland, it is a bit hard to reach but the view from your private jet hire will leave you breathless. Watching it during the sunset will definitely make some of the most beautiful memories.
Rottnest Island // A short ferry ride will get you to Rottnest Island. Here, you can see the quokka – a cute marsupial that loves taking pics with visitors. You can also enjoy the gorgeous beaches and historic buildings of this car-free island while on your day trip.
