If you are looking for a suitcase offering an innovative way to travel, look no further than the Jey&em ONE. Featuring snap-on laptop cases, secure TSA-locks, and a unique tilt to balance, the ONE has plenty to offer for business travelers.
I was gifted this laptop bag + luggage combo, and I had the opportunity to test it out on my work trip this week. In partnership with Jey&em, we reviewed the ONE in grey.
What is the Jey&em ONE?
The Jey&em ONE is a unique suitcase that has a click-on laptop case. If you prefer not to carry your laptop in a backpack or tote, the ONE allows you to store your laptop on your carry-on, but easily remove it if you need to work on the plane or check your bag.
This suitcase for business travelers comes with two options for laptop cases: the BAG or the SLEEVE. The BAG has an extra zippered compartment for your belongings, as pictured below, to replace your current laptop bag. The SLEEVE, on the other hand, has a few interior slots but is designed to primarily hold your laptop. Both are easily attached to the front of the hard-shell suitcase, and both have zippers that will lock onto your suitcase so your laptop cannot be tampered with. In my opinion, this is perfect for when I leave my personal laptop in my hotel room.
The interior of the Jey&em ONE has two zippered components: I typically pack my clothes in one half, and my toiletries and miscellaneous items in the other. There is a pocket on each of the zippered components, and when you first open your ONE suitcase you will find charging cables, laptop bag straps, and a laundry bag.
Have you ever had an issue with your suitcase falling over? I’ll admit this was something that I struggled with while using my soft shell suitcase in my earlier consulting days. I would frequently pack extra clothes or my laptop in the front pocket, and my suitcase would occasionally topple forward. To fight this, the Jey &em suitcase has a 5 degree tilt to help balance your suitcase out. This is just enough to balance out the laptop case, without causing issues while navigating.
The Best Things About the ONE
Like the Jey&em ONE, every carry-on used for business travel these days should roll with 360-degree wheels, include a built in TSA-lock, and be made of premium materials . A lot of higher end bags will also have a built in battery pack, and ONE fits the criteria. So what makes this suitcase different?
I was intrigued with the snap-on case concept during my first look at the Jey&em website, and I was curious as to how easy it would be to remove and re-attach the laptop case. I originally predicted that it might be difficult to line up the magnetic fasteners that keep the case in place; but I was wrong! Switching between the sleeve and bag for photos took place in under 10 seconds, giving me confidence that this would be a swift task at the airport or at the client site.
Concerns with the ONE
The ONE is cleverly designed with features that are unique to any suitcase that I have seen on the market. However, there are a few changes that I would make. Other than finding the interior zippers small and difficult to grip, there was one big component missing for me.
I was able to easily fit one week’s worth of professional clothes in my ONE, along with the steamer, curling iron, two pairs of shoes and toiletries I typically include in my business trip packing list. However, I am not a strong person, and especially with the opportunity to pack my laptop in my carry-on, I found the suitcase quite heavy. My single biggest concern with the ONE is the lack of a side luggage handle. I found myself reaching for an extra handle while pulling my suitcase off the security belt and struggling to pull my suitcase out of the overhead bin. However, I have had suitcases without side handles in the past, so it will be something to get used to.
Final Thoughts on the Jey&em ONE
While designed for business travelers, one advantage to this suitcase is if you want to carry your laptop, but your personal item on the plane is a small purse or camera bag. This may be a great space safer so you don’t have to consolidate those extra bags into a gigantic backpack.
I’m very happy with my ONE. The grey color is sharp, and the laptop sleeve is a great place for my personal laptop while I am traveling for work. The additional laptop lock is brilliant, and I’m not sure if it’s just because it’s new, but the wheels are insanely smooth compared to my old suitcase. This is a suitcase that I am excited to show off to my coworkers this week.
