There are two factors that keep me from traveling: available paid time off, and flight cost. PTO is not always flexible, but cost is something that we have more control over. There are many costs that go into planning a trip, but since I get plenty of hotel points through traveling for work, the cost of a flight is typically the biggest contributing factor on where I will visit.
Matt’s Flights is an email alert service that provides updates on great flight deals coming from the United States and Canada. This service is excellent if you want to travel, but don’t necessarily care where – with the domestic and international flights sent to your email, you might see a deal for a location that you had not considered before.
I have been subscribed to Matt’s Flights for a few months, since I am always on the hunt for the cheapest deals. I was recently approached by Matt to try the Premium Service for this review, which includes premium-only deals and trip planning support. To review the service, I asked Matt to find flights for some upcoming trips this year.
My request for Matt’s Flights
When I was ready to test out Matt’s services, I emailed the following two requests for upcoming trips:
- I’m interested in taking a 5 day trip to Peru, flying out of SJC (preferably), SFO or OAK. We would like to go between July-September, and are flexible as to when. I’d prefer for two of the days to be over the weekend.
- I’d also like to visit Mexico City for 2-3 days. I’d like to fly out of Dallas (either DFW or DAL), and then return to either SJC (preferably), SFO, or OAK. I’d prefer to leave on or the day after March 29, May 3, May 31, or June 21.
I sent the request on Friday, December 27. Even though it was a holiday week and a Friday, I received my flights back from Matt about 9 hours later! For flight one I was provided a $591 flight on American Airlines. For my second multi-city flight, Matt found a flight for $277 for us on InterJet and Volaris. With both flights, Matt was able to find an option into my preferred airport.
With both an open-ended request and a specific one, I was impressed with how quickly Matt turned around my requests, and at what prices he was able to find. I had to double check – and I didn’t find any flights cheaper than what Matt sent me. The Premium Service will make my trip planning so much easier in the future!
