Designed to keep you from carrying multiple bags, the company Knack has developed an expandable laptop backpacks with a patent-pending expandable luggage compartment. In addition to the professional appearance that will get you through the workday, the travel backpack’s expandable section can be used for business travelers, gym goers, or busy parents.
In partnership with Knack, we reviewed the Medium Expandable Knack Pack in Savile Gray.
An Expandable Backpack for Business Travel
If you are looking for a good travel backpack for work, then the bags from Knack Pack should fall into consideration. This bag is 2-in-1, replacing a carry-on bag and work bag with a hybrid backpack. When used as a regular professional backpack, the Medium Expandable Knack Pack will easily slide under the seat in front of you on the plane. When expanded it will fit under the seat in front of you on commercial jets, or it can be stowed in the overhead bin while traveling for work. Whether you are traveling by plane or by car, the Knack Pack will get you to where you need to be.
I am a huge fan of the built-in pockets and having a place for everything. The triangle pocket on the front provides easy access to business cards and pens. While this pocket provides quick access to documents as you are traveling through the airport, the triangle zippers took some time getting used to. The main compartment of the Medium Expandable Knack Pack has lots of organization pockets for tablets, keys, headphones, or anything else you can think of.
Professional Backpack for Work and Travel
For work, this expandable backpack has a padded laptop compartment (the medium Knack Pack fits a 15” laptop), which makes it easy to get your laptop out while heading through airport security. There is also a separate zipped pocket at the bottom of the bag for your computer’s charger. It’s very convenient to be able to quickly grab my charger when arriving on-site; the charger pocket makes getting set-up at the client so much easier.
This business travel backpack also has a fleece-lined sunglasses pocket, along with a divider where you can easily stash your phone while going through the airport. There is also a zipped water bottle pocket, which is not something I usually see on professional backpacks. I am able to fit my firm’s S’well water bottle within easy reach.
Concerns as a Work Travel Backpack
When I was first looking at the Knack Pack online, I had a few initial concerns. A lot of expandable bags tend to look chunky, but I was surprised at how sleek the Knack Pack looks when the expandable compartment is zipped up. The fabric covers the expandable zipper so that the Knack Pack looks like a normal professional backpack.
Business Backpack for Women Business Travelers
My second concern was that this backpack for business travel would be too large. I am 5’8”, and I was worried that the backpack would look too big for my frame when expanded. I don’t want to look like an actual backpacker when traveling with a carry-on backpack! The medium backpack was an excellent fit, and the straps are padded and comfortable. The medium fits my needs, but I would recommend looking at the large expandable backpack if you are planning to travel for more than a few days.
The One Bag Lifestyle
Knack talks about the One Bag Life, the idea that we shouldn’t have to carry multiple bags everywhere we go!
However, as I am traveling for work, I am not likely to travel without a suitcase in addition to my laptop bag. As a consultant, I typically travel three to four days a week. The medium Knack Pack can fit one pair of shoes with two outfits, whereas I usually bring two pairs of shoes, four outfits, my make-up bag and a hair dryer. Even though there is a large Knack Pack available, I have a hard time imagining showing up to a client with only a backpack.
The Knack Pack also has a back storage pocket, should you decide to disconnect the shoulder straps. This can be used to protect your straps in the event that you have to check your bag. While it can be nice to have the option, I would avoid checking the bag that holds my laptop. I don’t think I would ever need to hide my shoulder straps, but it could be used for easier storage.
While it is unlikely that I would use the Knack Pack as my sole bag while traveling for work, this business travel backpack is perfect for one day business trips. If you are traveling to a client for only one day, the Expandable Knack Pack is perfect for bringing toiletries and a change of clothes. The foam back panel and chest straps also make it easy to carry heavier loads.
Final Thoughts on the Medium Expandable Backpack for Business Travel
My husband, an engineer who travels weekly for work, was extremely excited to see this expandable backpack. Not only does the Knack Pack look sleek as a work backpack, but he tends to travel with a lot of testing equipment. The expandable compartment is great for when he is packing for work trips, helping him carry extra supplies to and from his work site.
My favorite things about the Knack Pack are pockets for everything, and the fact that it looks sharp. Many travel backpacks on the market look like you should take it hiking or look like you are going on vacation. While the Knack Pack wouldn’t look out of place outside, I would not hesitate to take this backpack to work. The Knack Pack is a great investment as a professional work backpack, and it can be flexible in a variety of situations.
