This past week I went on a two night work trip, and I wanted to share the outfits that I packed. Over the course of the three days, I spent one day traveling (from San Francisco to Chicago), one day teaching a class at an internal firm conference, and then one day in our firm’s office meeting with coworkers.
Smart Casual Outfits for a Work Trip
For internal conferences and working in my firm’s office, we have the flexibility of wearing jeans. My outfits this week were smart casual; if I were going to a client, I would wear ponte pants every day instead of jeans, and depending on how professional the client is I would switch out cardigans for blazers. I also exclusively wear heels at clients, but this week since I was walking around a lot I primarily wore my flats.
Day One: Travel Day
For my travel day, I wore a cami, cardigan, and ponte leggings. This is also a smart casual outfit I would wear to the office. My personal uniform this fall has turned into camis and cardigans, and you will see that throughout my outfits this week. I am also excited because this cami was reversible, giving me additional options for my short work trip. I love traveling in ponte leggings because they’re basically professional leggings; super comfy and I could have worn them later in the week. For work I typically wear pointed toe shoes, and this week I chose to bring my Rothy’s flats for getting around.
Day Two: Conference
In the past, for days that I am teaching I would typically wear a blazer, but this week I felt like only packing cardigans. I wore the same cami but in a different color, paired with another cardigan and jeans. I had packed heels in my suitcase, however I chose to wear my flats again since I would be on my feet teaching. This outfit took me through the work day and then through our happy hour networking event.
Day Three: Office and Flying Home
For the third day of my work trip, I again wore the same smart casual uniform: a cami, cardigan, and jeans. I re-wore the cami from my travel day, but reversed for a new color. I also re-wore my jeans and shoes. Since I was going to the office, it would be a new audience who wouldn’t have known what I wore the previous day anyway.
My Work Trip Packing List
In total, for this two night conference, I had the following on my work trip packing list:
- 3 cardigans
- 3 pairs of pants
- 3 camis
- 1 pair of heels
- 1 pair of flats
- 1 trench coat
While I did choose to re-wear my jeans and one of my reversible camis for this trip, I do typically pack an extra outfit in case I spill something or have to stay an extra day.
Overall, my packing list for my two night work trip was pretty lazy and simple. Fortunately I could wear smart casual outfits, which are light to pack. Additionally, since I have a personal uniform, grabbing three cardigans and three tops is an easy task, and I can figure out which color combination I want to wear once I arrive.
The class went well, and a lot of our coworkers seemed engaged in the material. I had the opportunity to meet a lot of coworkers in person, who I have previously only talked to over the phone. This work conference and business trip was a success!
