There are many features to consider when shopping for a new bag for travel. I have been travelling for work for a few years, and I have tested out a variety of backpacks and work totes. I have realized that there is one feature I absolutely cannot live without: the trolley strap.
If you ever plan on using your new bag as your personal item while traveling, it is absolutely crucial that you check to make sure it has a trolley sleeve before purchasing. A trolley sleeve is going to be a crucial feature that will make your journey around the airport tremendously easier.
What is a trolley strap?
A trolley slap is a piece of fabric that attaches to the back of your bag, whether it’s a laptop case or backpack. The idea behind a trolley strap is that you can secure your personal item over the handles of a suitcase, such as your carry-on. Some bags may have zippers so that the trolley sleeve can be adjustable or used as a pocket. For totes and backpacks designed for travelers, the trolley strap will typically be fixed to the bag and is not removable.
What is the purpose of a trolley sleeve?
A trolley strap is the single bag feature that separates road warriors from casual travelers. A solution to many problems, a trolley strap will:
- Keep your tote off the dirty airport floor
- Secure your bag to your luggage while you sprint to your gate
- Prevent your backpack from being swung into people’s faces while boarding
- Reduce back and shoulder strain from lugging your bag around
You can try placing your regular backpack on the top of your carry-on, but without the trolley strap you are going to have a bad time. Within five minutes, your bag is bound to fall off. In order to keep your backpack or tote on your roller bag, you will need to balance it’s contents just right and creatively wrap your straps around your luggage handle. The most organized way to navigate the airport will be by slipping your bag over your luggage handle, securing it with a trolley sleeve.
How do I find a bag with a luggage sleeve?
Many backpacks and totes branded for travelers will come with a trolley sleeve built onto the bag, but it is important to check prior to purchasing if this is an important feature for you. If you can see the bag in person, simply turn it around and see if there is a pass-through pocket or strap that acts as a luggage strap.
If you are shopping online, you can typically tell through the photographs if the bag has a built-on trolley sleeve. However, be cautious that sometimes what looks like a trolley strap may actually be a large pocket. You will want to read the description of the item, and look for key words such as trolley strap or luggage sleeve. You can also reach out to the company directly, and ask if a trolley sleeve is a feature of the bag. Typically, if a trolley sleeve is built-in, the feature will be highlighted in the product description.

Once you have used a bag with a luggage sleeve while traveling, you will not be able to go back. A trolley sleeve is going to be the best way to attach your tote to your luggage, making airport or city navigation significantly easier. Especially if you typically travel with a carry-on, let your suitcase take on that extra weight, rather than you.
